new life ramblings (11/6/09)
Sit back and relax. I love writing the New Life ramblings. These are just random thoughts on life, church, my family, God and faith.
- The ladies event tonight will be incredible. They have 400 preregistered. Wow. Yes—you can show up at the door. Eileen Hunter is the guest speaker.
- This has been one of the most powerful weeks of my life. To watch New Life stretch their giving muscles. After I left the service on Sunday I felt a supernatural strength words can’t describe. Just an amazing day.
- Sunday we begin a two week series called “Relentless Compassion”. I am so pumped about these next two weeks at New Life. God—break our hearts for the marginalized, the poor and the broken of this world.
- We are doing a blood drive at New Life on Friday, November 13. Sign up here.
- My favorite moment last Sunday—I had some parents say, “Our kids want to give you the money for our Big Give.”….three kids had saved $100 and wanted to give it directly to me. I couldn’t help but think about the impact this would have on these kids.
- We will celebrate the “Big Give” offering on Sunday. We received the largest offering in the history of New Life on Sunday.
- In August we announced our Big Give goal of $800,000. As of Sunday we are at $600,000. (this includes cash, commitment cards and some verbal commitments). I am confident in the next 8 weeks we will bring in the remaining amount.
- We gave the green light to the general contractor to finish the chapel. Very exciting moment. Some trust in chariots and some in horses…but we will trust in the name of the Lord our God.
- In a couple of weeks we begin a series over the Lord’s Prayer called “Our Father”. We are going to challenge everyone to pray the Lord ’s Prayer everyday for five weeks. Life changing. Lord, teach us to pray!
- Strawberries have more vitamin C than oranges.
- On Sunday, November 15, Missionary Alan Johnson is speaking in the morning. Then he will be available at 5:00 PM for a question and answer time with a missionary.
- The chapel will be used for Softer Sundays, The Well, Senior High Axis, Simply Worship, Renton Christian School, Funerals/Weddings, Community events, etc.
- I love Simply Worship. Something breathtaking about spending an evening in worship and prayer. The next three Simply Worships are: February 3, 2010, March 3, 2010 and April 7, 2010. Mark these on your calendars now. This means we only have two more Simply Worships in this current building.
- Last weekend we had a church plant in Vancouver, Washington receive an offering for our Big Give. Their lead pastor Mark Newell is a great friend of mine. We helped plant their church. They brought in $1,100 for us. Amazing.
- The Big Give offering was over 10 times larger than any previous building offering ever received on a given Sunday.
- Someone even gave some jewelry to the Big Give….I am not sure of it’s worth…but amazing.
- Read Luke 6:27-38 to prepare for Sunday.
Your Giving Muscles
Yesterday I had a conversation with our pastors and staff. I guess I would call it “your giving muscles”
We all have muscles. If you don’t exercise they get weak and fragile. Giving is a muscle you have to exercise. Jana and I learned how to exercise these muscles early in our marriage. I thank God we did. I remember the first time we gave $500 to missions. It hurt. It stretched us. It was essential as a young couple to learn to exercise this muscle.
How are you exercising your giving muscles? If you don’t tithe to the local church—it may seem overwhelming to begin. I get this. But—start exercising your muscles today. Start with lifting 10 pounds or anywhere. I have a deep conviction that our goal should be 10% of tithe to the local church. But—start somewhere.
I don’t lift weights. I know I need to. (Jana does. Does this count for me?) For now hear my illustration. If I started to lift weights I couldn’t bench press much. But—I need to start…with a little.
Start somewhere in exercising your giving muscles.
Here is what they say with weight lifting…The important thing to remember when it comes to strength training is that you must give your muscles more weight than they can handle–that’s how muscles grow.
You have to start giving “more than you can handle”. I don’t mean to be stupid. But…give more than you’re comfortable with.
Stretch yourself. If you are a faithful tither, remember tithing is the foundation to your giving, not the ceiling. Give to missions…give to hurting people…give to people groups who have never heard the name of Jesus.
If you randomly give in the offering just to make yourself feel better—start being systematic. Decide on a percentage and start. Have the goal to give 10%. But start with a few weights. If God has blessed you and gifted you to make a lot of money…don’t just buy another toy. Advance the Kingdom of God with your wealth. Write that $10,000 or $100,000 check to make a difference.
I had a couple sit down with me and say, “Pastor—we want to give in the Big Give Offering (Offering for our new building, November 1st). But we don’t have any money. We are strapped. What would you do?” I said, “You need to stretch your muscles. Do this—both of you pray—ask God—What should you give? Share it with each other. Decide on this. “ It was funny they both already had a number in mind. Then I said, “Sell something. Do an extra job. Include your kids. Do a lemonade stand if you have to (just a joke) Stretch your muscles. As you give it—make this a spiritual act of obedience. Make it a declaration—my family won’t live in a selfish way. My family will be givers. We are out of shape now…but are going to make a spiritual declaration—God is our provider. God is the owner. Everything spending decision I make honors him.”

new life ramblings (7/17/09)
- Twice a year my wife and I do a prayer and planning retreat. In July and December. Very meaningful times.
- Sundays are my favorite day of the week. It is the day the church gathers. The church walks throughout this community seven days a week.
- I am so excited about this Sunday. Jesus is speaking to His bride. Read Revelation 2:12-17.
- I posted a couple of journal entries this week. Be sure to read them below.
- I visited our Junior High camp this week. Love seeing Junior High students love Jesus.
- Sept. 20 we are planning a 40 day fast. Praying for our community, church and world. We are specifically going to pray for Sunday, November 1. We need to receive $800,000 to finish phase one of our building. Everyone needs to be involved.
- Did you know between Lift (Junior High), Axis (Senior High/early College) and Crossing (young adults) we have 275 students and young adults involved with New Life? This is amazing. We are planning a huge gathering at the end of the summer to bring all three of these environments together.
- Fleas can jump 130 times higher than their own height. In human terms this is equal to a 6ft. person jumping 780 ft. into the air.
- We are doing concrete tilt up walls. They will be going up soon. August 9 we will take a moment in our services to celebrate the walls going up. It’s going quick. If you haven’t finished your “Now is the Time” commitment—now is the time. We need this by November 1.
- We are taking over 80 Senior High students to summer camp this next week.
- I am speaking in Axis Church this week.
- Jana and I love you. We love New Life.
- We moved the offering back to the middle of the service. We want the end of the service to be a time to respond to the preaching. Thank you for being patient as we try different things. A healthy church is always rethinking how and why they do everything.
- I had a 90 old lady approach me about getting baptized in water. I love it.
prayer and planning retreats
For the last 10 years I have done what I call prayer and planning retreats. I started this habit in 1999. I have been taking notes on each of them every year. Recently Jana has just joined me. I do these twice a year. One in December (to reflect on year and get ready for next year) and one in July (mid year check up)
They are simple. I go to a hotel for two nights. I eat meals with Jana and spend the rest of the time by myself. I pray and plan. Typically I break these into 2-3 hours chunks of time. (we may sneak away for a movie and some other fun things)
Here is what I do:
- Pray
- Read Bible
- Journal (ask myself tough questions)
- Reflect on personal core values and personal mission statement
- Review personal goals
- Review what I call road rules and “one rules” in my life
- Ask God for a new dream
- Sleep
- Read a book
- Write out prayers
- Listen to a pod cast
- Write a letter to someone
- Call a friend
- Take an honest look at my spiritual and emotional life
- Review goals for new life
- Write
- Think about next years teaching series
- Thank God for life
The toughest part of this is doing it. Putting it on the calendar and saying–yes I am getting away.
I can’t tell you the benefit of this time. Jesus withdrew from the crowds. He needed time alone…if Jesus needed time alone–how much more do I need time alone?
If I don’t spend time alone–I will have nothing to give when I am with people.
new life ramblings (5/1/2009)
Every week (or most weeks) I take a moment to share what is on my heart. Everything from what is happening at New Life, our culture, in my life and just random stuff. I call this “New Life Ramblings”. Enjoy! Feel free to respond back! Give input! Ask questions! Grab a cup of coffee and catch up on what is going on in my mind.
- I was at a Northwest Ministry conference all week hanging around a bunch of pastors.
- Sam and our worship team led the conference in worship on Wednesday night. They did an outstanding job. I was so proud that it actually brought me to tears.
- The last episode of Heroes was amazing.
- Gen. 40 on Sunday! Can’t wait! Read this passage to prepare for Sunday!
- The building is happening! Wow! All week they were drilling geo piers for our foundation.
- Life lesson—you can’t see the geo piers. We can’t see the foundation of our lives. So many things God does in our hearts we simply can’t be seen. But, without a strong foundation our lives will crash.
- Take some time on Sunday to check out the progress of the building (we have a viewing station).
- Simply Worship is this Wednesday. I can’t believe we are in May. Sam and Jana do great creating an environment where we can pursue intimacy with God.
- RCS uses 418,000 sheets of paper each school year.
- Follow me on twitter. Ok, what is twitter? I send out personal updates and thoughts throughout the week. You can receive them on your cell phone. All you have to do is set up a free account through www.twitter.com. Then decide to follow me. If you don’t get it—don’t worry about it.
- 40% of McDonald’s profits come from the sales of Happy Meals.
- Jana and I leave for Hawaii in 10 days to celebrate 20 years of marriage.
- Beginning May 10 we are going to experiment receiving the offering at the end of the service. Why? We want to encourage people who say yes to Jesus to fill out the NEXT card and put in the offering plate as it goes by. What do you think?
- Lots of people coming to Married Life Live tonight. It will be great. Last minute people still can register online or at the door. Click HERE to register online.
- Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 10. Mother’s Day is one of the largest Sundays we have at New Life. Moms have a lot of influence on this day (and everyday). Moms—tell your kids, husbands, relatives that you would love to sit together in church as a family. Do brunch before or after.
- See you Sunday!

I call this “New Life Ramblings”. Enjoy! Feel free to respond back! Give input! Ask questions! Grab a cup of coffee and catch up on what is going on in my mind.
- We had Simply Worship on Wednesday night. Amazing. There is a hunger for God and a spiritual awakening happening at New Life.
- Easter is only 9 weeks away.
- My daughter turned 18 this week. I took her out on Monday night and we had a “dad and daughter” moment. I wrote 18 thoughts for her 18th birthday. Click here to view this.
- Roosevelt Hunter was outstanding last weekend. Thank you New Life for praying for my friend. Last night I had someone ask if they still can give to Roosevelt.. The answer is yes. Just put in offering marked “Roosevelt Hunter”.
- As always you can watch the sermon online. Click here to watch Roosevelt from last weekend.
- This Sunday we will be showing Roosevelt Hunter at Encore Café. Great time to check out Encore Café this Sunday at 6:30 PM.
- MarriedLife Live is filling up quickly. Buy your tickets online or in the lobby on Sunday. (men-don’t forget Valentines day)
- It is amazing how many churches are asking about our kid’s ministry. Our KIDTOUGH material is stirring up a lot of questions with other churches. Next month we have 3 churches showing up just to check out “Kidstown”.
- Did you know that Polar bears are left handed?
- I start a new series over the book of Hebrews this week. I am very excited. Read Hebrews 1-3 to prepare.
- Our students are fired up after last weeks winter camp with Roosevelt Hunter.
- Did you know that we baptize adults on the third Sundays of the month? The next water baptism is Sunday Feb 15.
- Are you a member of New Life? If not—our next membership orientation is Sunday, Feb 22nd.
- Today I prayed Psalms 107:29 over New Life—“He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed”.
- Jana and I are praying for people who may be losing their jobs. We have already had people respond back saying God has answered the prayers. Email me your story if you also want to be added to our prayer list.
- Just met with some missionaries from Argentina. New Life is having an impact all over this world.
- I cleaned out my desk drawers today. Why do we save weird things? For so long?
- Did you know we gave Northwest University $25,000 to help building their new science center? As we build our new building, let’s sow seed into other people’s dream.
- Every day I walk into our church, I see the impact we are also making Monday-Friday. We have over 450 kids in our school and daycare. If you are remotely interested in Christian education, I want to encourage you to attend the open house for RCS this Tuesday (Feb 10th).
- Randy just walked into my office. He reminded me we are having an annual business meeting on March 11th. I am hoping we can do this meeting in 90 minutes or less. (less is the key word)
- Drifting is a slow process. It doesn’t happen over night. We don’t fall away from Jesus, we drift away. You don’t wake up one day and say, “I don’t want to follow Christ”…we slowly, without even thinking about it, “drift”. How do we avoid the drift? This is the question we will wrestle with as we study the book of Hebrews.
- I have put together a small group study guide over Hebrews. You can pick this up at guest services each week or download from our web site (great for personal growth too).
- Memorize Heb. 2:1 to prepare for our Hebrews series “We must pay careful attention therefore to what we have heard, so that we do not “drift away” (put it on a 3 x 5 card and hang on refrigerator, mirror, etc).
- This week I read Proverbs 1-6, some Psalms and spent time digesting the book of Hebrews during my quiet time. I love the Word of God!
- Jana and I love being your pastors!
new life ramblings (1/30/09)

I call this “New Life Ramblings”. Enjoy! Feel free to respond back! Give input! Ask questions! Grab a cup of coffee and catch up on what is going on in my mind.
- I had so many meetings today. Every time I meet with anyone from New Life I feel so blessed to be pastor of this great church.
- I met with Darla Sherman. She is long time member of the church. Full of wisdom. So full of God.
- I met with Jason and Kelli Krafsky. They have recently made New Life their home church. They have a passion to see married couples love Jesus and be in healthy relationships. Check out his blog at www.marriagejunkie.com. New Life is blessed to have people like them involved with our church.
- One more thing about Jason and Kelli Krafsky—they will be our speakers at MarriedLife Live on Friday, Feb 13th. (yes, Friday Feb 13th, let me say it again, Friday Feb 13th)
- I met with our general contractor today. They are so excited to get started. Details are coming together.
- You will see some progress in the construction zone on Sunday…we have a work trailer, some dirt is moving—we are still jumping through some hoops…hang in there…stuff is happening.
- Ok, enough telling you about my meetings.
- Will we make another mistake and communicate the wrong date of MarriedLife Live again? Read the bulletin closely and see this weekend. Click here to sign up for MarriedLife Live today.
- We have been approached to do a pilot program weekend called “Fireproof your Marriage”. It is based around the movie “Fireproof”…What do you think New Life?
- This week we connected a ton of people in Small Groups. Last Friday 30 adults joined men and women Small Groups, on Saturday 30 couples joined married Small Groups, on Sunday we started a couple of new Crossing Groups and Starting Point Groups. On top of all this 63 people started in Crown Financial Groups.
- Our youth are going to Winter Camp this weekend. Pray that God would do some powerful things. Roosevelt Hunter is the speaker there. Roosevelt will also be speaking Sunday morning at New Life. You don’t want to miss it.
- I had another local church give New Life $5,000 to our new building program. Talk about the body of Christ working together! Amazing!
- I watched the interviews with Ted Haggard this week on Larry King Live and Oprah. Talk about mixed emotions.
- Simply Worship is next Wednesday Night, Feb 4. Jana will be leading us in worship. This is a time to be in the presence of God together as a church family. We do this nine times a year (every first Wednesday of the month expect July, Aug and Dec). You don’t want to miss this.
- Our giving for January was strong. Thank you for your generous and systematic giving!
- Did you know that a snail can sleep for three years?
- Sunday night is Super bowl. There will be no Encore Café, or Axis youth service. Join with some friends (or your Small Group) and watch the game. Crossing and Fusion will be doing a Super bowl party together.
- Part 2 of the Perfect Storm is this Sunday called “The Other Side”. Again, I am so excited to have Roosevelt Hunter sharing. He will share his personal story of dealing with cancer. Read Mark 4:35-41 to prepare for Sunday.
- Last Sunday we almost ran out of room in our 10:30 a.m. service. I need 50 people to move to 9, 12 or 6:30. (this is why we need to build)
- This Sunday we will be praying for people at the end of all of our services who need a miracle. Come Sunday prepared to receive from God a miracle!
- Our staff is reading Hebrews together. We read Hebrews 3. I am so excited for the next teaching series beginning Feb 8.
- Jana and I want to pray for individuals who are being or in danger of being laid off their job. Feel free to email me your story. We will add your name to our prayer list. David said, “I have never seen the righteous forsaken”. I have faith with and for you.
family meetings
This May will be 20 years of being married. I love my wife and two precious girls. They are the centerpiece of my life. I have to confess something to you though…sometimes it is very difficult to lead them spiritually. I know this is horrible to admit…but at times it is easier to lead a church of 2,000 than a family of 4. I am not sure why.
Over the past 20 years I have discovered one simple truth. I need to carve out a time every week to lead my family spiritually. Again, I know sounds like a very obvious statement. Here is what I have discovered–carving out a time once a week–fosters a culture to lead my family throughout the week.
“The family that prays together stays together” Great quote. But, it scares every man alive. This quote makes us feel intimidated, guilty and lost. Where do we start? How does this look?
Then if you have a wife who loves Jesus–this makes it even tougher. Why? Ladies just seem to know how to pray better than men. I don’t know why. It just seems like they are more comfortable. Listen to me ladies–if you have a husband remotely interested in leading the family in prayer times…give him space. Don’t pressure him. Let him lead.
Jana and I have struggled with this over the years. She just prays more naturally out loud than I do. She has her images of what “family” prayer looks like. She has had to learn to give me space. Let me find my own way to make this happen.
So men–here is my challenge. Be bold. Start a family meeting today. I want to help you with this. So here are a list of practical ideas I have found helpful. There are a ton of other ideas. But here is what I have found to help me out.
- Again, ladies let your man lead. Don’t tell him how to do this (unless he ask). He will be awkward. This is ok.
- Have your family meetings only once a week. I can hear some people say, “is this all you do?”. Yes. I have found this makes the family meeting special and unique. My girls are at church all day Sunday, in their small group once a week and involved with so many other things. They don’t need me to over church them at home
- Make it short. I mean this. No more than 10 minutes. I plan for seven minutes. Sometimes it will go longer because we spend more time “catching” up on the week. But, make it short. If you go to long, you will avoid it next week.
- Pick a time. We do our family meeting after dinner on Monday night. We only get a few dinners home every week. Mondays is a good day for us. We don’t set up an exact time. We simply say, “after dinner on Monday”
- Pick a location. We simply go to our family room. We don’t have a TV in our family room. This helps.
- Just do a few things. Don’t over complicate it. We do three things—discuss the upcoming week, read the Bible and pray. I will explain each of these.
- The first things we do is discuss the upcoming week. Jana writes down “details” that impact the family. Who is going where? What time is this or that? We catch up with each other.
- The second thing we do is read the Bible. Here is the rule of thumb: The age of your kids will determine what to read. When are kids were young I simply found a kids Bible and read from it. Today I read 10 or so Scriptures out of the Proverb of the day. For example tomorrow is January 19. I will read 10 scriptures from Proverbs 19. DON”T MAKE COMMENT OR PREACH WHEN YOU READ. There is something powerful and simple just to let your kids hear the Bible. They don’t want to hear dad preach. They just don’t. Don’t complicate this. Just read the Bible.
- The third thing we do is pray. I simply pray a short prayer. I will sometimes mention my kids and wife by name. If you have to– write down the prayer. Don’t complicate this prayer. After the Scripture reading say, “Let’s pray”. I know you will feel awkward. I get this. But, just open your heart and pray. (Again, ladies…thank God your husband is different than you. Let him be different)
- When you miss the family meeting (and you will) don’t try to make it up. Just get back on it next week.
- Don’t use this time to deal with discipline issues. (Occasionally we will have emergency family meetings. But this has nothing to do with this subject. Maybe another blog)
- Be natural. Be yourself. While everything I just wrote works for me…find your own voice.
- Occasionally we will run and go grab ice cream or go to starbucks afterwards.
- Don’t expect angels to show up every week.
- Again, keep it simple.
One more time… here are the three things we do during our weekly family meeting:
- Discuss the upcoming week…a time to catch up
- Read the Bible..a time to read not talk k
- Pray…a time for dad to pray for his family.
Men–step up and lead. I totally understand that there are many homes where the mom has to provide this leadership. Perhaps you are a single mom or your husband has no interest to even think about this. In those environments for sure mom you have to step up to foster this culture.
new life ramblings (1/16/09)
I am beginning a new communication piece called “New Life Ramblings”. Every week we will send out the New Life News and the New Life Ramblings. Communication, communication and communication. I hope you find this communication piece helpful
- Today I prayed at a building dedication for Vision House. Vision house works with homeless moms and provides housing for them. Amazing, amazing and amazing! They are located in the Highlands. I was moved to see this ministry and their impact on this community.
- The leadership at Vision House was overwhelmed with the generosity of New Life during the Christmas season. I love this church!
- Did you know a tablespoon of coffee creamer is 30 calories? I need to cut back on coffee creamer big time. Can you say green tea?
- I read Proverbs 15 today. This chapter is filled with convicting truth. “he who hates correction will die” (Prov 15:10) or “A mocker resents correction” (Prov 15:12).
- Our 10:30 services are full. I know I say this often, but if your schedule allows you to make it at 9:00, 12:00 or even 6:30 this is great.
- We are baptizing 2 people this weekend. Water baptisms remind me why I pastor.
- My small group started to meet again this week. I sure missed them over the holidays. We are studying LOST. A great study on how God views money.
- I met with our creative team today. We talked about a series we are doing right after Easter on Genesis. I love the Word of God. We will focus on the life of Joseph
- Easter is only in 13 weeks…crazy…
- God continues to build patience in me regarding our building permit. We are held up due to some issues with the Muckleshoot’s Indian’s. Nothing big….patience, patience and patience. I am looking in the mirror as I type this.
- I haven’t sat in my hot tub yet this week…I need to do this.
- 63 people signed up for Crown Financial. Wow! I love seeing people get their finances in line.
- Pastor Ricardo made a statement this week, “we minister to people, through people”…profound thought. How can we mobilize 2,000 people to minister to people?
- Had a meeting today—we talked 45 minutes about missions. I am very excited about the strategy we are developing to reach people in this community and around the world.
- Going to Hawaii in May. Can’t wait! 20 years of marriage…I am sounding like an old married guy.
- We are starting a series over Hebrews in a couple of weeks. Very excited about this.
- Read Acts 15 to prepare for Sunday. Focus on Acts 15:19. Great Scripture.
- Next weekend is GroupLink. If you are not in a small group this is your chance to find one. Click here for more details. We have GroupLink three times a year. You don’t want to miss this!
